Art Gifts from our London Artists give something really special!

All the original art works below are for sale now, just click on the titles for details.

As a child I remember the artwork on our walls at home with huge emotion and affection. My father was a keen collector and our walls were adorned with large, impasto landscapes bought on annual holidays to Ireland, blue-painted ceramics arranged on shelves - and beautifully curated black and white photographs of Bristol, where we lived. We had a huge painting of lions basking in the shade which I would spend hours studying, imagining that I lived in Africa and was part of the pride.

I have painted since I was a toddler, always encouraged by my parents in a large household where we were lucky to have the space to create and no worries about the mess. My dad encouraged us four kids to paint the outhouses together starting off with big sweeping shapes and lots of white paint. That time was filled with laughter and fun. My passion for painting started with the focus being on pure enjoyment and freedom.

The legacy of art gifts means that we have something of the past generation to enjoy now. Art gifts can evoke memories, enrich relationships and is truly personal.

Art gifts show that you care

“What I am seeking is not the real and not the unreal but rather the unconscious, the mystery of the instinctive in the human race.”
- Amadeo Modigliani

Buying art gifts shows a personal connection to the recipient filled with consideration and thought. The person on the receiving end has a unique piece which has been chosen with their taste, individuality and personality in mind.
Art gifts that will last forever and be passed down to future generations is a really special way of saying that you have selected something unique and you care. It might be that the artwork evokes a memory, a sense of shared time or a subject, colour - or something else that the recipient is passionate about.

Why not commission an art gift, a one-off portrait or landscape that couldn't be any more personal as a present?

We have several artists who take commissions at Skylark including Stella Tooth.
She says, "Commissioning an artwork is
an enjoyable, collaborative experience which results in an artwork that celebrates your, or the subject's story, connects with you emotionally and projects your image through time."

This art gift will be unparalleled and a way to create a legacy and something to connect with daily.

A unique art gift just goes on giving

“If people knew how hard I worked to get my mastery, it wouldn't seem so wonderful at all.” - Michelangelo.

A piece of art is a combination of the artist's vision, experience and can often look deceptively simple. Well-executed artworks are a result of many hours put in, artworks often discarded along the way, and can showcase creative skill in a way that can appear effortless.... Many artists experience many emotions when creating and it's only the viewer who can interpret the piece and react to it in a truly personal way. There is often a journey behind each artwork which holds so much history within the piece.

Whatever the reason for giving, be it Christmas, an anniversary, birthday or other, the gift of art will keep giving forever.

Choosing the artwork that stands out for a friend, partner or relative can be exciting and filled with emotion. Here at Skylark Galleries we have such a wealth of diversity in artists and genres that there is something for everyone.

Helping artists and supporting communities

“If I create from the heart, nearly everything works: if from the head, almost nothing.”- Marc Chagall.

Every artist needs time to create and also needs to earn a living. We are all independent artists at Skylark so when you buy a piece from us you are supporting the livelihood of the individual as well as the community.

Helping artists remain in their practice is so important especially after the struggles that the art world has experienced in lockdown. By buying art gifts you are helping keep artists in their practice, supporting creativity and helping to keep art alive.

The emotional value of an art gift is a way of investing in a feeling, a reaction and a powerful uplifting sense of wellbeing. There's no comparison to a gift with a short lifespan in a world full of readily available items that can be on your doorstep in days. Art gifts take time and skill to produce and can be treasured daily.

Art gifts introduce colour to your home

Artworks give a space identity, character, atmosphere and colour.

“Colour. What a deep and mysterious language. It is the language of dreams.“ - Paul Gauguin.

Colour can be very seductive and plays a huge part in how we react to a piece. Is it calming, invigorating, uplifting? Is it a colour that the recipient has gravitated to before or will it be a new experience? Will it work in a home or office environment, will it sit with existing artworks or is the beginning of something new?

All these questions that are important, but most important of all is do you like it and how does it make you feel?

When it comes to colour it can have such a dramatic positive effect on wellbeing that it's often the first thing we notice about an artwork.

Choose what feels right

“I don't listen to what art critics say. I don't know anybody who needs a critic to find out what art is.” - Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Above all, how does the art gift make you feel?

You may be embarking on a redecoration of a home interior and be looking for the ideal piece for yourself or a friend, in need of some colour inspiration to ignite a new feel and palette.

Colour is so important in our daily lives

Sometimes there are no words to describe this as the language conveyed by the artwork is all of its own. If it could be said in words there would be no reason to create, paint or sculpt.

When you know the recipient of the art gift, or if the gift is all for yourself you can imagine how they will feel and the reaction to the piece is exciting. Go for what feels right and you won't go wrong.
