The decoration on this handmade ceramic vase is a nostalgic response to a year spent observing the changing forms and flora of our natural environment. The base of the vase was thrown on the wheel in stoneware clay and then built up with coils of different clay bodies, creating a 'horizon' line on the finished piece. The decoration is carved 'sgraffito', involving the scraping away of a cobalt coloured (blue) slip to reveal the natural clay beneath. The final glaze firing creates a satin finish to the exterior of the vase, while the inside is a rich turquoise blue.
Each piece I produce is made entirely from scratch, without a mould, and with free-hand decoration rendering it entirely unique.
